In order to emphasise the importance of value education in sustainable development of society and facilitate developing of value system for sustainable development in preschool and primary school, Faculty of Education and Management and Institute of Sustainable Education (Daugavpils University) in cooperation with National Centre for Education organised scientific- practical conference “Value education in preschool and primary school based on competencies approach” which was held on May 14, 2014 in Daugavpils.
In the conference took part 134 preschool and primary school teachers from Latvia, teaching staff from Daugavpils University and officials from National Centre for Education. The conference was opened by Arvīds Barševskis, Rector of Daugavpils University and Imants Vasmanis, Head of General Education Contents Department at the National Centre for Education. Dr.paed. Ilga Salīte, professor at Daugavpils University and Chair holder of UNESCO chair spoke about “Sustainable competencies in context of life action and sustainable education”. The Head of General Education Contents Department Imants Vasmanis spoke about values in the new standard project based on competencies approach. The penal session finished with S. Austruma’s (Senior referent at National Centre for Education) speech “The importance of value education in today’s society”. The importance of value education in today’s society was emphasised during the conference. There were discussed civic, moral, ethical, ecological and cultural values, as well as their development and understanding in preschool and primary school pedagogical process. There were seven practical workshops: 1) Health and sport as a value; 2) Civic values; 3) Ecological values; 4) Ethical values; 5) Cultural values; 6) Moral upbringing in family; 7) Integrated project works in developing understanding of values.
